What happens at participating stores?

The promotion is location-based. Pokémon GO says Trainers can visit select participating retail locations and open the game to access the event content.

  • Mega Gengar appears more frequently in Mega Raids at participating locations.
  • Shiny Gengar can be encountered if you are lucky.
  • Opening Pokémon GO at a participating store can grant event-themed Timed Research.
  • The research rewards include Poké Balls, encounters with event-themed Pokémon, and additional rewards.

Do not wait until November to claim the Timed Research

There are two deadlines worth separating. Trainers must obtain the Timed Research by October 20 at 10:00 p.m. local time. Once obtained, however, the tasks can be completed and rewards claimed until November 20 at 10:00 p.m. local time.

That distinction matters for collectors and players who only have a short window to visit a participating retailer but may need more time to finish the research itself.

Gengar Knit Cap bonus: a separate October 31 deadline

There is also a gift-card promotion connected to the event. Trainers who redeem an eligible Pokémon GO gift card purchased from Target, GameStop, or Best Buy between September 27 and October 31, 2026 receive the Gengar Knit Cap avatar item.

Pokémon GO says the offer is limited to one per account. Players who already own the Gengar Knit Cap receive an alternate item of equal value. The gift-card code must be redeemed through Pokémon GO’s official offer-redemption system.

Why this event matters to Pokémon TCG collectors

This is not a new Pokémon TCG set announcement—the 30th Celebration expansion already launched in September. Instead, the retail event is a crossover promotion designed to bring Pokémon GO activity to stores carrying Pokémon products during the anniversary release period.

The 30th Celebration expansion itself is unusually collector-focused. The Pokémon Company says each booster pack contains five foil cards, one foil Basic Energy, and one Pokémon TCG Live code card, with one of 30 unique Pikachu illustrations included in every pack.
