Updated October 17, 2026. Steam Next Fest: October 2026 runs October 19–26, beginning and ending at 10 a.m. Pacific (noon Central / 1 p.m. Eastern). Valve's weeklong event offers free demos of upcoming PC games, developer livestreams and opportunities to provide feedback. It is a demo festival, not a free full-game giveaway.

Steam Next Fest October 2026: dates and times

  • End: Monday, October 26 at 10 a.m. PDT.
  • Where: Official Steam Next Fest hub.
  • Price: Participating game demos are free; system requirements vary.

How to download free Steam demos

  1. Open the official Next Fest page in Steam.
  2. Browse by genre or search for an upcoming title.
  3. Open its store page and choose Download Demo, if available.
  4. Check PC requirements, storage and controller support.

Some demos become available before the event; others go live October 19. Developers determine whether demos remain available after October 26 and whether progress carries into the final release.

Frostrail: survival aboard a steam train

Frostrail is a survival first-person shooter from FakeFish and Shiro Unlimited. Players scavenge, craft and fight hostile creatures while maintaining a steam locomotive in a frozen wasteland. Its public demo is scheduled for October 19–26. Check the demo listing to confirm its exact co-op capabilities rather than assuming all full-game features are included.

Mr. Magpie's Harmless Card Game: a strange office deckbuilder

Mr. Magpie's Harmless Card Game combines deduction, cards and unsettling workplace horror. Giant Light Studios released an expanded free demo in early October, adding improved onboarding, card systems and office exploration. The demo is available to investigate before Next Fest begins.

Is Steam Next Fest a sale?

No. Next Fest focuses on playable previews of unreleased games. Valve's separate Steam Scream V promotion is scheduled for October 26–November 2. Downloading a demo does not mean receiving a full game or a discount.

Before you install

  • Verify you're downloading a demo rather than purchasing the game.
  • Check minimum system requirements and available disk space.
  • Confirm whether demo multiplayer is enabled.
  • Do not assume save data transfers to the full release.
  • Follow official developers for availability changes.
