Undead Labs Leaves Xbox: What the Split Means for State of Decay 3

Undead Labs has completed its separation from Xbox and is now an independent, employee-owned studio, while development on State of Decay 3 continues. The change is significant for the studio behind the long-running zombie survival series, but it does not mean State of Decay 3 has been canceled or pulled from Xbox.

Here is what players actually need to know about the studio change, the game’s current development status and the milestones still ahead.

Undead Labs is independent and employee-owned

Undead Labs announced on September 22, 2026 that it had completed its separation from Xbox. Microsoft acquired the studio in 2018, making this a major change in ownership after roughly eight years inside Xbox Game Studios.

The studio now describes itself as independent and employee-owned. At the same time, Undead Labs confirmed that it is laying off a significant number of employees. The studio has not publicly provided an exact headcount, so reports that attach a specific number to the Undead Labs cuts should be treated cautiously unless the company supplies one.

State of Decay 3 is still targeting 2027

The ownership change has not altered the publicly announced release window. Undead Labs says State of Decay 3 remains targeted for 2027.

The game is currently in alpha. The team is still working toward a closed beta before the end of 2026, following earlier alpha playtests. Xbox Wire previously said the playtest program would expand to more players and platforms as launch approaches.

  • Release target: 2027
  • Current development stage: Alpha
  • Closed beta target: Before the end of 2026
  • Confirmed platforms: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and PlayStation 5
  • Game Pass: Still planned for day one

There is still no specific 2027 release date, so any exact date circulating before an official announcement should be treated as unconfirmed.

What is State of Decay 3 actually changing?

The latest official material describes State of Decay 3 as a larger shared-world evolution of the series. Xbox and Undead Labs have highlighted a bigger open world, community building, settlement management, permadeath and online co-op for up to four players.

In June, Undead Labs said the gameplay shown in its 2026 reveal was captured from the game rather than CGI. The project is being built in Unreal Engine 5, with the studio emphasizing combat, world simulation and a more seamless shared multiplayer experience.

That makes the coming closed beta particularly important. It should provide a better indication of how the game’s expanded multiplayer, community systems and larger map perform outside the controlled conditions of internal and limited alpha testing.

Does leaving Xbox change Game Pass or PlayStation plans?

For now, no. State of Decay 3 is still announced for Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5, and the game remains planned for Game Pass at launch.

That distinction matters because studio ownership and game distribution are separate questions. Undead Labs becoming independent does not automatically erase publishing agreements or platform commitments already attached to State of Decay 3.

What has changed is the studio’s corporate status. Reporting on the transition says Undead Labs will work with a new publisher, but that publishing partner has not yet been publicly named.

What players should watch next

The next meaningful checkpoints are more concrete than speculation about the split:

  • Confirmation that the closed beta begins before the end of 2026.
  • Details on who will publish State of Decay 3.
  • Any narrowing of the current 2027 release window.
  • Additional gameplay showing how four-player shared-world systems work at scale.
  • Any changes to the already announced platform or Game Pass plans.

Players interested in testing can follow the official State of Decay website and the Xbox Wire playtest update for official information.

The bottom line

Undead Labs leaving Xbox is a major business change, and the accompanying layoffs make the transition more complicated than a simple independence success story. But the facts most relevant to players remain stable: State of Decay 3 is in alpha, a closed beta is still targeted for 2026, the game is targeting 2027, and Xbox, PC, PlayStation 5 and day-one Game Pass plans remain in place.
