Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Switch 2 Edition: New Gameplay, Shimmer and Heroes’ Vault Explained
Nintendo has released fresh gameplay footage and details for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition ahead of its December 3, 2026 release. The upgraded RPG adds a new Hero named Shimmer, the Heroes’ Vault battle mode, additional voiced scenes and major presentation upgrades for Nintendo Switch 2.
For players who already own Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo is also offering a separate upgrade pack rather than requiring a second full-game purchase.
What’s new in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition?
The biggest technical change is straightforward: Nintendo says the game runs at 60 frames per second, with resolution up to 4K in TV mode on a compatible display and Full HD in handheld mode. Cutscenes are also described as smoother and sharper.
The Switch 2 Edition is more than a performance patch, though. Its new content includes:
- Shimmer, a new recruitable Hero and speedy Attacker
- Heroes’ Vault, a new defensive battle mode built around waves of enemies
- Newly voiced event scenes
- 60 fps gameplay with improved resolution and image quality

Heroes’ Vault adds a new combat challenge

Heroes’ Vault is a defensive battle mode in which players fight through waves of enemies. Victories allow you to strengthen your forces by selecting enhanced abilities or adding allies before eventually facing a powerful final opponent.
Nintendo’s latest footage shows that those choices can include upgrades to statistics and combat properties such as maximum HP, damage, healing, movement speed and Arts recharge. That gives the mode a progression layer between encounters rather than making it a simple sequence of battles.
Shimmer joins the roster as a new Hero

The Switch 2 Edition also introduces Shimmer, a new Hero who can be recruited by completing her quest. Nintendo describes her as a speedy Attacker capable of rapid-fire combos and powerful strikes.
Her defining ability is Foresight, which allows her to see the future. As with the game’s other Heroes, adding Shimmer gives players another option for the seventh member of the party and expands the available approaches to combat.
60 fps could be the most noticeable upgrade

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is built around large environments, exploration and real-time combat, so the jump to 60 fps should be visible during both traversal and battles. Nintendo says the Switch 2 version reaches up to 4K in TV mode and Full HD in handheld mode while maintaining that 60 fps target.
Nintendo notes that 4K output requires a compatible display and that frame rate is capped at 60 fps for 4K output.
Do existing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 owners need to rebuy the game?
No. Nintendo lists a separate Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack for players who already own the original Nintendo Switch version. The full Switch 2 Edition bundles the base game and upgrade content together.
One detail worth checking before downloading is storage. Nintendo currently lists the full Switch 2 Edition at an estimated 42.6 GB, while the upgrade pack page lists an estimated 29.8 GB. Nintendo notes that file-size information can change before release.
